The Stand: Originally aired as a television mini-series, this all-star filmization of Stephen King's gripping epic of good versus evil chronicles the episodic adventures of a disparate group of people who struggle to reestablish civilization after a man-made catastrophe wipes out most of the world's population. The world abruptly ends when a deadly virus accidentally escapes from a government sponsored biological warfare laboratory. Soon people are dropping like flies from the plague, but a few survive and find themselves strangely compelled to head into the West. Good-hearted people follow the voice of an ancient black woman and head for Boulder, Colorado. Bad people follow the enigmatic Walkin' Dude to Las Vegas. It is only a matter of time before the two sides are forced into a climactic battle over the final fate of humanity. Golden Years: This made-for-TV mini-series from the notorious horror writer centers upon a hapless old janitor who begins undergoing incredible physical changes after he is accidentally covered with experimental chemicals following a laboratory mishap. Now the government will stop at nothing to get him back. The Langoliers: Ten passengers on a red-eye flight from L.A. to Boston discover that they are not the only people on the plane, but after making an emergency landing in Bangor, Maine, they discover that they are the only people on the planet. This film was based off the Stephen King short story Four Past Midnight.

2Stick to the movies or books  Dec 07, 2008
I really did not like this set at all. If you are a fan of the real movies like Carrie, Firestarter, Misery, etc. then you will be HIGHLY disappointed in these. Without the Love Boat, where do B grade actors show up? Here! Yes, you will recognize many faces but know no names and understand why these actors never made it big. So Langoliers is 3 hours, which could be done in a 45 minute Twilight Zone much better. I think there was a half hour Amazing Stories very similar to this back in the 80s (even if you don't like it, 30 minutes is better than 3 hours!). The Stand got such good reviews that I was compelled to buy this set. It has the best actors and highest budget (from the looks), but besides Rob Lowe, Gary Sinese and Ed Harris, you get the "Father" from Alf and others. It is about 7 hours to watch it all. I didn't make it more than a couple of hours (but in my defense I had spend 3 hours the prior day watching Langoliers). Golden Years is 4 hours. Here is my point - you lose a lot of detail going from book to movies, we all know that - but at least the movie should be entertaining. This set was an attempt to do much more from the books than a theater movie can do - thus the mini-series TV format. These remind you that reading is more enjoyable sometimes - I imagine that the people who love these, had already read the stories and these 14 hours were a walk down book reading memories. Perhaps if you had read these stories before, you will enjoy these. I had not read any of these stories before so my viewpoint is of someone looking for new, entertaining stories. But I got 14 hours of slow movie stories, and mediocre at best acting. I just had to post a review since all the other 5 star reviews fooled me into buying this set. If you have never seen these made-for-tv shows, rent/borrow them first to be sure they are your thing before buying. I think I need to pop in Firestarter to cleanse my TV - "burn it all down, baby".

5hours of enjoyment  Oct 18, 2008
I really enjoyed this product..Almost 13 hours of viewing...These were made for TV movies and are pretty good ..I usually watch about 1 hour of a movie each morning before work so these kept me entertained for a while..Gary Sinise is very good in The Stand..It has to be incredibly hard to make movies from some of Stephen King's works, but these are fairly true to his novels..A great buy!!!!

4Stephen King Gift Set  Sep 24, 2008
The Stand is a classic. The Langoliers was somewhat scary and The Golden Years was rather slow and somewhat dated.

4Stephen Kings gift set the stand golden years and langoliers   Aug 28, 2008
The Langoliers just happened to be in the set, no value to me, but the Stand and Golden Years were some of the best I've seen and for the price the value of this package is very good.

5One of my favorites  Jul 25, 2008
I really loved the Stand and the Langoliers, had never seen the Golden Years, but this is now one of my favorite DVD's.
